How To Change A Car's Thermostat

A car's thermostat is a component of the cooling system that helps maintain the proper temperature inside the engine. In short, it helps not too overheat the engine. It is a heat sensitive device that runs the cooling system when it's too hot. The opening valve of this component is prone to wear and tear, which can stuck at any position. If this happens, the cooling system cannot work properly. So before something wrong occurs, the best thing to do is to replace it.

Changing your thermostat in the comfort of your own garage is possible. Here are some simple steps on how to change your car's thermostat:

1. Check the car's thermostat first and make sure that it really needs replacement. Deep a hot water on the thermostat to see if it's working. If its not working, then it's time to purchase a new one. Go to a local auto shop or check your car owner's manual for the recommeded thermostat. Make sure your engine is cool before working on any part of your car's coolant system.

2. Remove the radiato cap carefully. Use a rag to release easily the pressure then remove the cap completely. Then, drain the water in the cooling system down below the thermostat level. Remove the thermostat afterwards. You can find it by following the path of the top hose of the radiator.

3. Remove the hose by using the screwdriver to remove the clamp. Loosen the hose from the thermostat cover as well as the bolts on the thermostat. Pull the cover and remove the thermostat. Be carefuel when doing this for you might crack the housing. Remove and clean the gasket on the thermostat cover.

4. Insert the new thermostat, then place the new gasket and tighten housing. Screw the bolts in place and place back the hose. Start the engine and check for any leaks. Inspect the coolant level and replace it if necessary.
